I love quotes on writing. They provide food for thought for me as writer and – I hope – for you as reader. They’re also great for beating blogger’s block – or making plans to cover your blogging holiday
But I could do with some help in gathering more quotes – so I’m wondering if you have a favourite place to pick up quotes on writing? Or an all time favourite quote that captures the essence of writing?
Let me know by leaving us a comment – or if you’re so moved why not write about it on your own blog and link back here?
If I had to pick one, hmm… for now I think it would be this one from Hemingway.
“All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.”
It cuts right to the heart of the matter, reflecting my own beliefs about writing with confidence.
Keep it simple. Get it out there. And write it from the heart.
Joanna,
I wrote two blog posts at Writer’s Notes a few months ago in which I listed quite a number of quotes by writers on writing. Thought you might enjoy reading them.
One is called, “Some Apt Quotes By Writers About Writing”: http://www.writersnotes.net/some-apt-quotes-by-writers-about-writing/ ; and the other is entitled, “More Fitting Quotes By Writers on Writing”: http://www.writersnotes.net/more-fitting-quotes-by-writers-on-writing/2/ .
And by the way, I’ve selected you for the Rockin’ Girl Blogger Award! Visit my blog and see! Here’s the post: http://www.writersnotes.net/rockin-girl-blogger-award-time-to-pass-it-on/ .
Best regards,
Jeanne
Thanks for the links Jeanne and the quotes you’ve gathered together there.
I loved the quote from Mark Twain
“The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug.”
I guess the challenge for us writers is to be able to tell the difference…
Joanna
Definitely! We are ever searching for that perfect word which will express our thoughts with absolute precision…
Jeanne
The perfect word is like the perfect tune.Maybe we reach it when what we express resonates or has a certain impact on someone. For me writing in English is a challenge,it’s not my native language, so finding the perfect word is exactly what I’m always looking for.On the other hand I speak out of my heart so I can’t stop writing once I’ve written the first word(lots of edition then)Thanks for sharing your expertise and love for writing,Joanna and Jeanne
