Quotes on Writing and Freedom #3: The Permission Slip

by Joanna on July 21, 2008

Much of this book [On Writing] has been about how you can do it [that is - write] better.

The rest of it – and perhaps the best of it – is a permission slip: you can, you should, and if you’re brave enough to start: you will.  Writing is magic, as much the water of life as any other creative art.  The water is free.  So drink up.

Drink and be filled up.

Stephen King, final paragraph of “On Writing”

A contribution to the theme of writing with freedom.

Brilliant quote, Joanna.

Permission to write – that’s such a powerful concept for anyone wanting to express themselves through the form of the written (or typed) word.

We also should be kind enough to allow ourselves permission to succeed and to fail. For therein, lies the rewards of creativity.

Lillie, I’m glad you liked it :-)

Scott, I think we probably need permission slips for lots of things, not just writing! Would that it were not so… likewise permission to succeed and fail could take us a long way in life.

This is one of the books in my summer pile– I sure hope I get to it!

Joanna Young 07.22.08 at 8:42 am

Karen, it’s well worth a read. You can skim some bits (like the writing advice in the middle) but the beginning and end are very powerful. I read the whole thing on my flight to Chicago – I think that’s one of the reasons I was so hyped up when I got there!

Hope you get round to it… and enjoy your summer reading
