Comments, Community and Conversation

25 September, 2008 Posted by Joanna As Snippets

A few bits and pieces on the comments and conversation fronts.

Comments

Paragraphs are back!  Some of you might have noticed it was kind of difficult impossible to break your comments up into paragraphs.  I’ve discovered and implemented the necessary fix to the code so you can now break up your lovely long comments.  Thanks to Jeanne Dininni for bringing this to my attention.

You can now see a list of the people who are the most regular and generous commenters. (The list appears in the sidebar).  It’s a nice reflection of the community here, plus I’m hoping it will encourage Karen Swim and Brad Shorr to keep writing more and more comments as they vie for top spot…

Thanks to rjleamann for encouraging me to add this plugin.

By way of reminder: out of respect for genuine comments and conversation here I delete comments signed off by key words rather than people.  I don’t mark them as sp*m, and I do allow some - if they’re interesting and thoughtful comments, rather than opportunistic ways to tempt someone to visit your site.  It’s not a hard and fast rule - as the comments in the last post on this topic show, it’s  not an easy one to police… except for the fact I’m the policeman, and get to decide.

MyBlogLog

I’ve decided to get rid of the widget showing recent visitors on the sidebar.  Although it’s always been good to see pictures of *you* I was getting tired of seeing pictures and links to semi-pornographic sites.  Maybe I should view it as a sign of success that people wanted to show their wares here… but I didn’t think it was in keeping with the rest of the atmosphere on the site.

Twitter

I’m trying to get back into Twitter after an extended break over the summer while I was moving house.  If you’re on Twitter please do say hi - I’m most likely to follow people who jump in or say hello, plus it would be nice to ‘meet’ some more readers.  You’ll find me on Twitter @joannayoung

Zemanta

This is a bit of a non sequitur, but it fits with housekeeping updates.  I’ve started experimenting with Zemanta - it’s a way of finding and adding in relevant links (and other things like pictures if you want).  You’ll see the links to relevant articles listed at the end of the posts.  My normal link rules apply: I only include the link if I’ve visited the site myself and think it offers something of relevance and value to you.

Thanks to Brad Shorr for the inspiration to try Zemanta.

If You’d Like To Comment

If you’d like to comment but aren’t sure how… it’s easy and painless, I promise.  All you need to do is go to the end of the post (the article), if needs be scroll down past comments that other people have left, until you get to the box for you to leave your comment.

You’re asked for your name, your e-mail address (which isn’t revealed, it’s just to confirm you’re real), and a place where you can leave the url to your website, blog, twitter or flickr account if you have one - or just leave that bit blank.  Type your comment into the box - you’ll see it previewed underneath the box, which helps you to edit before you hit “submit”

Your comment will then show up underneath the post, alongside your picture if your e-mail is registered with Gravatar, otherwise with a pattern picture.  You have an option to sign up for e-mail notification of comments on the post (you get an e-mail each time someone adds another comment).

If you do have a blog your last post will show up after your comment with the comment luv plugin (covers most but not 100% of blogs).

I think that’s everything.  If you’d like to add your views, please do give it a try.  I’d love to hear from you.

Anything Else?

Is there anything else you’d like me to add, or take away, to improve your experience as reader, commenter, or member of the Confident Writing community?

Hi Joanna! Thanks for the update - good to see you getting back in your groove. (I also like your use of the Robert Hruzek strikethrough technique.) Let us know what you think of Zemata. They recently put out an update which allows you to filter for specific images. Now, I’m off to figure out how Karen Swim got ahead of me on comments. She’s a formidable opponent! :)

Hi Joanna! I really like the changes and the updates. Your new place just keeps getting better. It is a bit like the decorating that happens over time after moving into a new place. It’s already beautiful but as you settle in you add your own touches. :-) I especially loved your words about how to comment. I have been looking for just the right words to instruct non-bloggers and may quote you on a special page - well done! This is exactly why you are one of the Top 10 Writing Blogs. Useful, timely information delivered with warmth and respect!

Brad, you will have to work really hard to beat me! :-)

Joanna, thanks for the update on breaking comments into paragraphs. I’m afraid I get a little long winded and time so often do that.

I was about to get of MyBlogLog, too, but when I went to see how to get rid of “Sexy Lady” showing up daily, I discovered that they have a system to block any pictures you do not want to show on your site. All you have to do is put your cursor over the picture and a little red “x” appears in the upper left corner. Voila, it works. I did it on my site because quite frankly I would have deleted MyBlogLog, too, because these photos embarrassed me.

I’m glad you have taken off the bloglog thing. It seems to detract rather than add. But the I like a rather uncluttered feel.

Is there a way to do RSS feed on your comments? I use this for a couple of sites I’m active on, and that is a huge help as I don’t have to have extra emails to keep track of a line of thoughts.

Another thing I’ve been wondering - about those who aren’t that familiar with the RSS subscription notice. When I first started paying attention to that, not so very long ago actually, I thought the subscription was a fee thing. As in you subscribe to a newspaper or magazine for a certain subscription fee. Do you think that stops people from using RSS? And how could you go about making it clear that it is free, without obligation, ya da ya da ya da?

And I find people who have no clue what RSS even is. I’ve been trying to decide if there is a fairly easy way to explain…

Any thoughts on that?

Brad, I’m trying to use more of Hruzekian strikethrough. It didn’t show up on the feed though which made it look a bit odd - any idea why that might be?

I’m enjoying Zemanta so far though I had to switch it off last week while they were upgrading - a few tech glitches. I tend to use flickr cc for images but have been finding their automatic links useful, and the posts on other sites very much so. I’d say about 25% are relevant, which isn’t bad. I’ve also had some links in the way already too.

I’m enjoying watching you and Karen go for the top spot. I think she might still have you beat though :-)
PS I had some fun on Twitter yesterday asking how to spell vie. I got a ton of responses! It was a good clue about how to get into the twitter stream - ask questions that you genuinely need to know the answers too. People like responding to those requests (and showing off their spelling!)

JoannaNo Gravatar September 25, 2008

Robyn, I don’t think your comments are long-winded. I love getting long comments here, often very thoughtful or explanatory, and it’s only right that people should be able to use paragraphs. It was a strange behind the scenes formatting thing. It was good to have the incentive to track it down when Jeanne asked me about it.

I hadn’t realised you could filter the mybloglog but it makes sense that they offer that service. I’m not sure if I’ll switch it back on or not - some people are saying they prefer it gone. I’ll suck it and see for a while I think

JoannaNo Gravatar September 25, 2008

Bo, I prefer uncluttered too, but am still guilty of finding new things on other sites and thinking ‘oh! I’ll add that…’

Thanks for the reminder of the RSS comment feed. I had been meaning to add this for ages but had been a bit stumped as to where to put it (as the design for the main RSS subscription is built into the theme for the blog and I didn’t want to break it).

I think I’ve cracked it now and you’ll find the RSS feed for comments just under the recent comments section in the sidebar - seems like a reasonable place to put it?

Thanks for the prompt to fix this

JoannaNo Gravatar September 25, 2008

Bo, that is a very good question.

There was a post on Copyblogger about this a while back, making that very point. Subscription is associated with payment. The argument was that you change the language to ‘get free updates’ or something similar. You might find it an interesting read.

http://www.copyblogger.com/increase-blog-subscribers/

I’ve just changed the language I use to reflect those points - it does make sense (and lets face it most bloggers will just go for the orange icon it doesn’t matter what you call it)

On how to explain RSS - I have some difficulty with this. I’ve written posts explaining it in the past - I’m guessing most of us have at some point - but that’s no use for someone coming for the first time.

The solution is to have a link to ‘what’s RSS’ somewhere near your subscribe button.

I haven’t made that change (because I can’t tinker with my sign up box very easily) but you’ll get an idea of how it looks and works at Problogger. His description of what’s RSS is very good.

http://www.problogger.net/what-is-rss/

Copyblogger also has some text on what’s RSS that you’re free to make use of.

http://www.copyblogger.com/what-the-heck-is-rss/

Hope that helps. This is probably a post in itself some time… I’ll see what other gems readers offer first though.

Karen SwimNo Gravatar September 25, 2008

Joanna, these types of conversations are so helpful! I was thinking of adding MyBlogLog but as a result of this conversation I believe I will hold off too. Bo’s comments also provided insight and reminded me to address RSS again. I have not done that since I moved. The other thing I’m learning is that even with nifty new themes you still have to learn to navigate the individual quirks to do what you’d like. My gosh, there is always some new detail to attend to, isn’t there?

Karen Swims last blog post..Mid-Week Musings

JoannaNo Gravatar September 25, 2008

Hi Karen, sorry for jumping over you! It’s hard to find the words for the things we take for granted - like how to follow in a feed, how to comment - and as I was just saying to Bo, even if we find the words it’s hard to find the right place on the blog to explain it without making the place over-cluttered.I guess like you say it’s a question of constant experimenting and improving. At least with a blog unlike a house you can easily undo any disastrous ‘improvements’ you make! Whereas living with bright orange paint takes longer to adjust to…I’m having fun watching you and Brad go head to head. Actually I like watching that plugin full stop, because it’s a constant reminder of the people who spend time here, and give so generously of their ideas and thoughts.

JoannaNo Gravatar September 25, 2008

Karen, yes, that’s one of the things I’ve found too. Although I can do a lot more with Wordpress it requires me to be able to adapt and work round the quirks a lot more too. Which is great in terms of learning and new skills… but can sometimes seem like a big technical challenge!

Jeanne DininniNo Gravatar September 25, 2008

Joanna,

Thanks for looking into the paragraph problem. It’s so much more fun to comment now that we’re able to format our comments correctly! They look so much nicer! Glad I could help.

I enjoy having the MyBlogLog widget on my site (though I understand why you removed it). One reason I like it is that it lets me track down at least some of my readers who visit but don’t comment. I’ve found some great blogs that way!

It also serves as a reminder when one of the bloggers I follow is overdue for a visit! Sometimes I even learn, via the MyBlogLog widget — once I click over to make one of those overdue visits — that another blogger has linked to or made reference to me in a blog post (since bloggers often visit the blogs they link to while preparing their posts)!

By the way, I don’t get a preview of my comment under your comments box. Perhaps that’s your sole privilege, as blog administrator?

Jeanne

I’m sorry I’ve not been around for a few days Joanna- pc problems!

I’d just like to congratulate you on the brilliant achievement of becoming a Top 10 writing website. :-)

I’m hoping to install a gravatar soon. And a face to the comments.

JoannaNo Gravatar September 25, 2008

Jeanne, that’s good feedback on mybloglog. I know I used it a lot when I started it out and found lots of good blogs as a result. Maybe I’ll give it another go now I know I can weed out the porn queens!

Wouldn’t you know since I wrote the post the preview option has stopped working! I’ve just updated to the new comment luv - which provides an option to chose which post to link to - and it seems to have got in the way of the preview. Isn’t this always the way - you make one improvement just to find you broke something else! I’ll see if I can fix it.

JoannaNo Gravatar September 25, 2008

Scott, thank you :-) I was really thrilled to get there.

I know you’ve already got your face ‘out there’ - stumbleupon and twitter maybe? - so it should be no problem to get your pic up on gravatar - really it only takes a minute

Hope the pc problems are getting sorted

Ricardo BuenoNo Gravatar September 26, 2008

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having removed the mybloglog app. After all, you have gravatars now which show your readers faces :-)

Oh and by the way, twitter I don’t lurk on (ok, maybe sometimes I do…) but if I see you there, I”ll definitely say “Hi” and throw you a big wave!

Ricardo Buenos last blog post.."If you’re pumping out good shit, people will follow."

pelfNo Gravatar September 26, 2008

I have also deleted comments left by “keywords” because I don’t want my blog to look like the best place to drop their links.

I enable “do follow” but then, you must leave more than x comments before the “no follow” is removed. Which means that even if your brilliant “keyword” comment gets past the first time, it doesn’t mean it will get some link juice from me, LOL.

Joanna,
Thanks for the discussion on MyBlogLog. I had removed it from my blog because I thought it was slow down the page loading. When I had it, I wasn’t getting the kinds of images you describe. I added it back on my upgraded blog (which is still on a test site not yet finished), but based on this input, I think I will remove it again. I didn’t miss it when I didn’t have it.

What is the plugin you’re using for the top commenters?

JoannaNo Gravatar September 26, 2008

Ricardo, good point about the gravatars - though that doesn’t pick up the pics of those who are browsing and not commenting. I couldn’t possibly describe that as lurking!

It’s been good getting to know you on Twitter too… keep the conversation coming!

JoannaNo Gravatar September 26, 2008

Pelf, that’s a very neat way to beat some of the problems with ‘do follow’ - I don’t use it myself, but have heard about and seen them - very crafty!

JoannaNo Gravatar September 26, 2008

Lillie, now you mention it I had noticed that the site was often waiting on mybloglog to load - maybe another reason to keep it off. People seem to have mixed feelings about it.

I’m looking forward to seeing your new site!

The plugin is the top commentators plugin

http://www.pfadvice.com/wordpress-plugins/show-top-commentators/

I haven’t called it that on the sidebar, partly to avoid drawing attention to it by those who aren’t legitimate commenters.

There are a number of other versions around including versions with widgets - in fact they’re listed on that page I’ve linked to. I’m not using widgets so preferred to use this version and pop the code into the sidebar.

Lillie AmmannNo Gravatar September 26, 2008

Thanks, Joanna. I’ve been thinking about using a plugin like this but hadn’t decided for sure. Think I’ll try this.

Good luck getting the preview option back up and running!

About MyBlogLog: I’m sure it will be helpful just knowing that, should you decide you’d like to restore the widget at some point, you do at least have the ability to remove the offensive images.

Wow, Joanna, thanks for adding the edit-comments option! It’s great to be able to go back in and fix or add to our comments. In fact, I just did it with this comment (adding this final remark.)

Barbara SwaffordNo Gravatar September 27, 2008

Hi Joanna,

I think your site looks very professional.

I did some housekeeping on my blog awhile back and really like how the simplicity made it look better. It’s fun to experiment with different things, then keep what works and discard the rest.

Jeanne, I’m not sure I’ll hunt for preview - edit seems even better. I had a hunch it might work when the preview stopped working… and hey presto it did! Will probably all be different again next week though!

Barbara, thanks, I’m liking the theme and trying to stop myself from adding too much clutter to it. I like some of the plugins that work behind the scenes and help you manage and edit it - and systems that allow to check the speed of your site, like the references you shared a little while ago. I might not always understand how things work but I do enjoy finding practical ways to improve the reading experience here.

Debbie YostNo Gravatar September 27, 2008

Oh sure! Once upon a time I used to comment daily, but now that I only seem to drop by occasionally you put up just the top commentors! Added pressure I don’t need. :o

I’ve been thinking of leaving Twitter. I rarely drop by anymore. I’ve been doing Facebook recently and it’s been fun. If you ever sign up, let me know! I’ll want to add you to my friends list.

Debbie, it’s not meant to be a pressure! But I’m thinking we need a plugin to reward people who make the most number of comments in a 24 hour period :-)
Thanks for looking me out on Facebook. Each to their own I think - Twitter is great when you’re in the ‘zone’, but there are times when it’s beyond me too. And you do need to set aside time for it - or at least I do.
