Emma, strange isn't it, sometimes too many deadlines can make us feel squashed and uncreative, but one really big deadline... it can sweep everything else out of the way, and help us to focus.

Yes, definitely, I agree. It's the deadline what saves our focus.

I absolutely think that the stress of any deadline moves something forward. You wrote about the responsibility of that deadline and shifting it into significance...I like that about you!

Barbara, I think it all depends on the context. There are some forms of writing I couldn't do like that, but in this kind of business environment I was able to get into that focus zone and switch everything else off.

I certainly wouldn't want to blog under stress. My muse would protest too much!

Hi Joanna - Writing under stress is not my favorite method of writing, however like you said, it does have advantages. Although I try not to put myself in that position, I have found it's a great exercise in writing under adverse conditions.

Karen, writing in a den of rattlesnakes sounds stressful indeed. Sounds like you need a deadline for the ebook... or some more Twitter accountability ? ;)

Ellen, yes, I think that's what I'm grasping after here - we get a buzz from some circumstances that might appear stressful but in fact propel us to do more and better... whereas other things grind us down and sap our creativity. Working out which is which seems like one of the most important things we can learn - and folk like you can teach us!

Great post and discussion, Joanna. Interestingly, many of the folks we work with interchange stress with adrenneline rush, when these two both impact tasks such as writing. One is toxic and harmful and one is highly helpful. Have you noticed that too?
