Stefan, I'm very sorry I overlooked your comment - or rather overlooked replying to it. I think I got distracted by going off to watch the video. You're right - very similar themes, although I have to confess it didn't have the same emotional impact on me. Confirmation (if I needed it) that it's words that do it for me, every time ;-)

The poem made me think of my favourite short film ever: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb-0Py80cMY. Thematically similar but wordless.

Michele, hi - sorry you got stuck in akismet for a little while. Maybe it can't cope with all those smiles! It was written from the heart. I sat crying over the poem when I re-read it the other night, which is why I knew I had to share it with you here :-)

Robyn, thank you for picking up so eloquently on the theme of that poem. You've captured very well one of the most important dimensions - and challenges - of love.

Gennaro, I agree - lots to learn about love from poetry, and lots to learn about poetry from love :-) You're reminding me (to my chagrin) that I have a book of Neruda's poetry on my shelves... unread. I must rectify that. Thanks.

I can see the connection between the two questions. There is much to learn about love from poetry. My favorite poet in terms of romantic poetry is Pablo Neruda. The Captain's Verses is a beautiful portrayal of his passion. I also like that most editions come with both the English and Spanish versions. The original sounds lovely to the ear.

Joanna, sometimes the highest calling of love is letting go of what we love most to give it freedom... to open our hands as we would to a butterfly we'd ruin to clasp.

A mother Robin knows this instinctively as she knocks fledglings out of a nest before they can really fly.

I learn more about this every day... It's a life long process.

Andy, I agree there isn't much more to be said after that ;-) I saw Shane a few years back in Edinburgh and I was mesmerised (and speechless). He really had us in the palm of his hand, one minute laughing our heads off, the next weeping at a poem like this.

Alexander I'm glad you enjoyed it. It inspires me too, to write better, but also to express my ideas, emotions and beliefs, and not to be scared of being human

wilson, I believe that too. And you know, I feel so blessed to have such wonderful readers here. You give me such strength and encouragement.

Conor that is just the right way to describe it. Thank you.
